First Stop of the Charlotte Across America Adventure Report
So, as our first away from home adventure in activism together, My dad and I (Charlotte) met up with the Animal Justice Advocates at the University of Virginia (my human mom's Alma Mater). I love their enthusiasm and dedication to the cause of animal rights for pigs like me. They made this first stop on the tour such an amazing success and lots of fun. I know my dad is so grateful to his good friends Elise McMath and Alex Leck for helping to coordinate this with us and make sure we ended up in the right place on campus!
Everyone agreed that having me with them makes giving out vegan leaflets so much easier and more enjoyable. I pulled in so many people that just wanted to meet me and nearly every single person that came to see me willingly took a leaflet with many of them asking outright if they could have a leaflet (dad said it was like vegan Christmas having people ask him for a leaflet). In the end we nearly passed out 400 pamphlets.
And those leaflets came with a very specific memory of a little pig (me) who many people pet or took photos of while I searched for food or basked in the sun. And I can't help but hope this impacted the way many people will see the message contained within the leaflet.
Possibly my favorite thing I heard today, and I heard it twice worded nearly identically, was the phrase, "Oh my god, meeting her changes everything." And it was clear that the implication was that meeting a me changed their perspective on what is and isn't 'food'. And several others said, "Now, I feel so bad." Implying that meeting me changed how they felt about eating meet. I really think that many people walked away ready to consider a change on some level.
I to enjoy myself and all the attention. My only job was to be a pig , be loved, and eat treats,
So, I would rate the first experience as a amazing success. And I'm looking forward to our second stop at George Mason University next week!
And a special thanks to our awesome friend Kimberly Spiegel for getting me hooked up with the boxes of leaflets for this adventure!
