Amazing Turkey Facts You Didn't Know

Turkey Facts Image

Fact #1 Turkeys are affectionate ad form life-long bonds.  Quincy, Tia, and Freddie (our rescue turkeys here at Life With Pigs) arrived at our sanctuary together and have been a tightknit family almost immediately upon arrival. They look out for each other. And you will never find Tia or Freddie without Quincy nearby.

Fact #2 Turkeys are inquisitive and will follow visitors as well as their favorite humans.  We cannot leave the house without Quincy coming to greet us.  And he will walk around the yard watching what we are doing and it is clear he enjoys being around us and checking out all the things that we are doing.  Nothing escapes their notice.

Fact #3 Turkeys also know and recognize each other's unique voices.  When the turkeys are any distance from each other, you can hear them chirp to each other calling everyone back together.  And at night, if one of the females is hiding on a nest, both of the other turkeys will call to them letting them know it is time for dinner and bed.  And this seems to do the trick.

Fact #4 Turkeys are very protective of their family and watch their babies as a group.  While we've never had babies here at Life With Pigs (there are far too many turkeys already needing rescuing), we do see daily how Quincy watches over his family.  He is very protective of them and never lets his guard down when anyone new is in the yard.  But, in the wild, turkeys will watch over the babies born to their family jointly ensuring that they keep everyone safe.

Fact #5 Turkeys also enjoy music and will sometimes chirp along.  And they have very musical voices.  Often during the day we will hear the turkeys making adorable sounds as they go about their day.  And they will also greet visitors with a rousing welcome sound.

Fact #6 Turkeys are often maligned and not given credit for how truly amazing they are.  But the truth is, turkeys are intelligent, curious, and loving beings that deserve our compassion and protection.
