PUMPKIN
Pumpkin was rescued from a backyard breeding operation where she was used to produce litter after litter of piglets. When we met Pumpkin, she had recently had her last 9 babies and the breeder was moving out of state. They needed a home quickly for Pumpkin. At the time we lived in a second-floor condo but knew that most pigs don’t end up finding forever homes and wanted to ensure Pumpkin’s happy retirement. So, we agreed to adopt her and asked if she might keep one of her babies with her. So, now Pumpkin daily snuggles with her only baby that she was ever allowed to keep, Charlotte. While mini pigs are often seen as pets and better treated than most pigs, the lives of most mini pigs are far from comfortable or predictable. Over 80% of pigs are rehomed during the lives. Millie was living with 50 other pigs on a farm in Williamsburg, VA when the owner of the land demanded all the pigs be rehomed immediately. With homes for pigs in short supply, friends of ours offered to give Millie a home with their larger pig Ezra. Ezra had other thoughts about this and tried to flip the kitchen table to ask Millie to leave (in pig speak). So, already living with two pigs in a condo (Charlotte and Pumpkin), we figured we could at least watch Millie for a few days to give Ezra a chance to rethink his dislike of Millie. Ezra never changed his mind, and Millie ended up squeezing into the hearts of Charlotte and Pumpkin. So, Millie wound up becoming part of our ‘three little pigs’ that dominate our living room here at Life With Pigs Farm Animal Sanctuary. |

Charlotte was born on November 20, 2016 as one of the last litter of nine piglets that Pumpkin had before we rescued them together. We almost didn’t didn’t get Charlotte. At the time, we lived in a condo on the second floor and technically weren’t supposed to have any pets, let alone two pigs. But, we wanted Pumpkin to be able to keep one of her babies with her for life. So, we asked the breeder if Pumpkin could keep one of them.
Charlotte won over our hearts and the hearts of thousands of people she met as we took her to Colonial Williamsburg, dozens of college campuses, and even to lead a parade to ban meat in Berkeley, CA. Later, Charlotte was invited by Allison Argo to tour with her documentary The Last Pig to show people that happy pigs no more want to die to be made into meat than do miserable pigs. But the best part of Charlotte is that she is our baby. She loves to cuddle on the couch. She still thinks she can fit in her dad’s lap and will go to great lengths to be with her family. And every night she snuggles in the pig loft with her mom Pumpkin and adopted sister Millie. |
