Charlotte helps spread a message of compassion
Recently my family has been taking Charlotte on walks (and for a little rooting in Colonial Williamsburg). And she has gotten a lot of attention. Some stores have invited her inside to be loved on. And just about every family passing by has to stop and scratch her head and ask all kinds of questions about her. Fortunately, she seems perfectly at ease with all the attention and I believe leaves many people with a seed planted in their heart challenging the idea that pigs should ever be thought of as food. How could someone walk away from an interaction where they are smitten with this little girl and then later decide to put a relative of hers on their plate in the form of bacon, sausage or ham? It is often said that animals are voiceless, but I think simple interactions with someone like Charlotte the piglet allows her to be a voice for her fellow pigs. And the best part is she gets adored and loved on in the process.
