Once Sebastian made it through the night, we knew he had a good chance of recovery - though it would be a slow process. Once he had a little more energy back, we brought his best friend Sebastian in to visit him. We could tell how much it cheered him to hear his friend (though he still couldn't see him due to his eyes being swollen shut) and to do "normal" chicken things again. They hung out for a bit and ate dinner near each other. Hearing Jareth eat made Sebastian hungry and helped him to find his food on his own, though he still required hand feeding and watering for a few more days. Finally, one of Sebastian's eyes opened and his head started to heal. He was becoming restless inside, so we let him have some time in the sun with Jareth. It's hard to believe we almost lost our boy. Jareth already experienced losing his long-time companion Billy, and we would hate for him to go through that pain again. But today, both Sebastian's eyes are open and he looks almost completely normal! One of his eyes (the last to open) is slightly misshapen, but it's barely noticeable and if that's the worst to come out of this situation, then so be it!

Sebastian’s recovery story is truly heartwarming. It’s amazing how companionship can play such a powerful role in healing Jareth simply being there and doing normal chicken things clearly gave Sebastian the motivation to eat and regain his strength. Moments like these remind us how important emotional support is for animals just as much as physical care. It must have been such a relief to see his eyes open again and watch him slowly return to his normal self.
