Saying Goodbye to Charlie

​It’s with heavy and severely broken hearts that we share that our beloved turkey, Charlie, has passed. This spring, for the first time, she started venturing over the fence, determined to find a nesting spot. Despite our efforts to keep her safely in our yard, during one of her adventures and before we could reach her, a predator (likely a raccoon or fox) took her from us.  

While we work so hard to ensure everyone stays safe, we can’t help but feel we could have done something more.  We have triple locks in the chicken and turkey barn to make it a fortress.  We have cameras to make sure we can keep track of everyone even when not directly nearby.   And yet, still things like this happen and we can’t help but feel responsible. 

We are devastated. Charlie wasn’t just a turkey to us, she was a loving soul who made an impression on everyone she met. She would greet visitors eagerly, loved getting hugs, and would happily present herself for a good scratch under her wings. She was truly a cuddle turkey.

It’s difficult to share news like this, especially knowing how many of you grew to love her. Losing Odin and Charlie so close together, it has been a heavy blow. But we want to honor Charlie for what she was!  She was an ambassador for turkeys everywhere. She showed the world that turkeys are affectionate, curious, and full of personality.

Charlie’s legacy will continue. She reminded us why we do what we do: to show that every animal is worthy of love, protection, and kindness. Thank you for loving her with us.
