Life at the sanctuary is always full of surprises, and this week our sweet Huckleberry gave us quite a scare. It all began with his neuter surgery, a simple but important step in his growing-up journey. He handled the procedure bravely, and we were so proud of how calm and trusting he was throughout. But a couple of days later, we noticed something unusual: his urine had turned a shocking, bright red. Our hearts sank as we rushed to figure out what was happening. With Huck’s history, we worried about another urinary stone, but our vet quickly ruled that out. Instead, it looked like his kidneys were under stress from the combination of surgery, medications, and some dehydration. Tests, re-tests, and many anxious hours later, some relief finally came: his second urinalysis showed his urine had returned to normal, and a blood test showed his kidney values were already improving.
One thing we’re still watching is his anemia, which came up on the first blood test and has gotten a little worse since then. Our vet gave us a plan to treat: iron injections and a dewormer to give him a boost, which will hopefully help correct the issue. Through it all, Huckleberry has stayed his bright, mischievous self: eating, playing, and even sneaking in hair nibbles to remind us that he’s still full of spunk. This little lamb’s resilience shines through every step of the way, and we're so grateful for his trust in us as we help him recover.
