How Beatrice and Pumpkin Veganized a Family Last Night

How Beatrice and Pumpkin Veganized a Family Last Night
On her first outing Beatrice the chicken was making a big impression on people. Pumpkin and she make an amazing activism team. For one, Beatrice loves Pumpkin. She pretty much stayed close to Pumpkin the whole time we were out. Sometimes she even ate weeds and grass right out of Pumpkin's mouth. And Pumpkin was completely fine with this. They seemed like they had become immediate pals.
The biggest impact they made last night rivaled anything I've seen before while doing activism. A mother and her two daughters had come over to meet Pumpkin and Beatrice. And when they heard me say that chickens have been shown in many ways to be as smart as dogs, the mom said, "Wait, are you being serious?" And you could see this pained look of realization come across her face. So, we talked a little bit. And it was clear that her and her daughters were shocked to realize how misinformed they'd been their whole lives about the health impacts of eating meat, eggs, and dairy as I talked about the China Study and many of the most recent findings regarding the benefits of plant-based eating.
And when the mom said that she understood that historically humans had been omnivores in regards to our digestive and body make up. But, when I explained the length of our digestive tract and the embarrassing nature of calling our canine teeth true meat eating teeth, the three of them were again disappointed to discover how misinformed our world likes to keep people. And then I sealed the fate of this notion by asking if she thought she'd be appetized watching me stab Pumpkin, or by the smell of blood or rotting flesh? This truly destroyed any thought that humans were meant to eat meat. They knew, unlike a lion, they would be horrified by every aspect of 'carnivorous' behavior and reactions.
We also talked about many of the ways animals are mistreated. And this greatly disturbed them. They were clearly compassionate people that had just been ill-informed.
They left eager to learn more (I suggested some documentaries). And one of the daughters outright said I'd convinced her to want to go vegan. The mom said something similar in not so many words. And the last words the mom said was that they were about to go eat and she was certain the conversation had entirely changed what they would be ordering.
And all this started from meeting Beatrice the chicken and Pumpkin the pig and hearing me say that chickens have been shown to rival the intelligence of dogs.
I thought it was powerful for people to meet pigs. Apparently, meeting a pig and a chicken together is a one-two punch of activism. And the best part is that Pumpkin and Beatrice were having a great time eating grass together and bonding. And, I don't have to seek out or approach a single person. They come to me wanting to meet my lovely animal friends.
Thank you to my friend Lexi for joining us and helping make sure that Beatrice stayed safe on her first activism adventure.
